Activities
Artist Residency
The Residency is a sanctuary for Lao and international artists to pursue their passion in a creative heritage landscape, balancing solitude with self‑directed community engagement.
We invite artists to infuse Lao identity into diverse art forms: visual, literary, performance, culinary, botanic, folk art and others—drawing on Luang Prabang's diverse heritage as a source of inspiration.
Setting. The Tea House is in Xangkhong Village, a traditional papermaking and weaving community beside the Mekong River about one kilometer upstream from the Town of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Luang Prabang is recognized for its exceptional fusion of Lao architecture and European colonial style structures. The town’s outstanding heritage ensemble combines well-preserved religious and vernacular buildings in an inspiring green landscape where Buddhism and the traditional Lao arts flourish.
Facilities & Resources. The residency includes a private one-bedroom apartment and workspace with wi-fi, adjoining a 45 square meter exhibition space set in a tropical garden alongside the Mekong River. Our work-in-progress program is intentionally light-touch. We provide a framework for inspiration and experimentation that is evolving together with the artists who inhabit our spaces.
Timing. 10 to 30-day residencies for individual artists are offered from 1 October through 31 March. Slots may be available during May to September in exceptional circumstances.
Support & Benefits. Free accommodations and workspace, daily breakfast for one person at the Tea House café, wi-fi and utilities, exhibition space, and applications process. The Tea House can selectively provide introductions to local creative people and institutions in our network. Residents are responsible for their own pre-residency planning, making appointments, and for funding travel, meals, materials, equipment and all other costs and administrative tasks. We can endorse letters of support for artists that intend to apply for external funding.
Legacy. Though not mandatory, residents are invited to contribute a sample of their work to our collection —in physical or digital form— so it can be shared with our community and future residents. Alumni contributions will be duly recognized on our premises.
Application & Selection. The program is open to any artist seeking time and space in a creative Lao setting. People with all levels of experience are welcome to apply. Applications are assessed by Tea House managers and their advisors considering the proposed artform, applicant diversity, and geographic spread. The program aims to balance acceptance of emerging and established artists. Applications may be submitted anytime using this downloadable form. Applicants are informed of acceptance or otherwise by email within 4 weeks of submission.
